The entrance is an impressive arch, but the church itself… well, looks like an old grassy quarry, to be honest. Someone seems to have tried to make some sort of tiny harbour but good luck getting a boat under that railway bridge. This was the view from the car park, looking up Loch Carron. Boat trips? Makes me smile back. The minor road to Stromeferry is very quiet, and I soon reach the car park where my faithful Beast is waiting for me. Out in the water, under the line of blue mountains. Perhaps it existed when I walked there, but I missed it. Duirinish now has a cafe in that large barn the children in your photo are cyclying towards (it’s called the Croft Cafe and it was even open). I am planning to take the Inverness-Kyle train this coming Saturday, and I would like to do this walk, only the other way around, from Plockton to Kyle. I was very excited by the thought of palm trees in Scotland, but they turn out to be underwhelming. I squeeze past visitors with huge cases, and young people with light backpacks – who sound Scottish and I think must be students coming home for the weekend – to find a spare seat. The health and safety notices are old and weather beaten, so I guess the refurbishment is taking longer than anticipated. [This walk was completed on Sunday, 14th July 2019]. The last place I walked on the coast with a station was Thurso and that is a long way around from Plockton (and the station not very useful for walking the coast as the line then immediately goes inland). At the time they were all congregated around the telephone box and it looked as if they were queuing up to telephone home! I’m breathless from rushing up the hill, not wanting to miss the train, and am disconcerted to discover I’m the only person on the platform. I’m surrounded by woodland, with the sun streaming through gaps in the canopy. I soon come to a T junction. Ah, there’s the castle ahead. Achmore is a one-street village, and soon passed through. On a bend in the drive, I find another old building. Cows! The little creature is obviously aware of my presence and begins floundering about. It is unmanned, but prettily painted. The 1872 Heritage Railway Trail is a 9.8km return walk exploring the railway line between WA’s first ever timber mill, to it’s purpose built jetty in Rockingham. Luckily, there is only half a mile to go before I reach the turn off to Strome Ferry. Ah. I park The Beast in Plockton. Beautiful place, and gorgeous scenery. It looks lovely up there. The main street is narrow, crowded with visitors, and lined by tourist shops, B&Bs, and parked cars. It really is a beautiful place, and looks even better in sunshine and under blue skies. In the morning I went to Eilean Donan castle and then decided to do this walk later in the morning and into the afternoon in the hope the rain would ease (it didn’t) but at least most of the walk even the road bits is in woodland so I was partly sheltered from the rain. The road climbs gently up a hill, and I’m beginning to leave Kyle behind. But the electricity was dodgy and the water from the taps ran brown (a fact that is hidden by the dim lights, and that I only discovered on the morning after I’d drunk a whole glass before bed!) It has a pretty little waiting room, an empty platform, and is surrounded by woodland. Although it’s disappointing to be, yet again, inland of the coast, I really enjoy this forest walk. Plockton is a idyllic stopover for anyone touring the west coast in a boat. Such glorious views. Re-opening time appears to have been changed from spring to summer. I can see the car park where I left my Beast yesterday. My window looked out over the island with fir trees, and I didn’t realise that Plockton was so close, just hidden from view around the corner. Onwards, along the road to Plockton, which soon narrows to a single-track lane. I was very excited by the thought of palm trees in Scotland, but they turn out to be underwhelming. There is always a wealth of yachts and boats moored in the harbour which add to the picturesque coastal setting. You certainly got good weather for this walk.
